Caption: what this is. Might be a slug caterpillar, or a juvenile saddleback. Found it on an apple leaf; it's only a few millimeters long. Can you tell I've been giving my macro lens a workout lately?

Thanks, Pat! I took several shots before getting one I thought was good enough.

Well, Kim, I guess I wouldn't call it cute in the sense that baby bunnies or kitties are cute, but it does have a jewel-like quality. Thanks for commenting!

You might be right, Jerry, although the images I pull up by Googling that name look more like this:

It does appear to be a slug caterpillar of some sort, and I did beware the spines, which looked as though they would sting though I didn't test them out. A cousin of mine visiting somewhere in Florida had a nasty encounter with a Puss Moth caterpillar and showed me a picture of it; I am leery of such things now though I've never seen one in my neck of the woods. That is the beginnings of a Stinging Rose Caterpillar. Do not touch it, it will nail you with a nasty sting.

About as peacefully as a skunk, Liz! It doesn't have to run and hide because it has a certain air of confidence about it... Kidding aside, thanks for your comment, and if anyone can ID this for sure, I hope you will let me know.

Thanks, Mike! I'm pretty sure those spines would sting. But it is kind of a pretty thing, isn't it?
