Formed by the bursting open of dying plant stalks due to freezing, and the escape of moisture in them, which then freezes into these crystalline structures. This is the first time I have ever seen these and I wouldn't even know what they are if it were not that other WUG photographers have posted them before. I learn something every day on this site!

Cool. Not all plants do this - there are evidently only a few. We have one low growing one here that forms beautiful rose-like shapes. Somewhere I have pix of some from a couple of years ago when they were plentiful. I think weather conditions have to be just so for this to happen. Ain't Mother Nature grand?!

Thank you, Phatkat; I suspect you are right on both counts, or I would have noticed this before. These stalks are a type of salvia I haven't planted before; you can see them in bloom in some of my earlier pictures. Of course this morning, Tuesday, temperatures are above freezing, so the show is over for now.
