Thank you, MooseFan, but the plant did not resemble aloes at all. Was kind of spindly throughout; I will have to check whether I have a picture of the whole thing.

If the plant itself resembles a cactus, then I believe this is a flowering Aloe,very popular here in Arizona & of course with hummingbirds.
