I saw one like this off the Maine coast in July ... One year back in the seventies.
As a kid I was awestruck, wondering if this was some nuclear detonation.
For the naive, what caused this? Warm humid air front over the ocean.?

Woaaah! That is a jaw-dropper, traffic-stopper, and everything else-stopper! A few hundred miles northwest of you (northern Michigan) we had incredible 'rippled' clouds that came through and painted the sky. The northern part of the same system...I'm wondering? Thanks for sharing this amazing photo.

About rpm88
rpm88 I've been a hobbyist photographer since high school. Bought a Canon AE1 while in college, and for decades shot nothing but Kodachrome (25 until extinct, then 64). I wanted realism. In the 90's I gradually transitioned to Kodacolor. I still consider myself a holdout from the film days. But lately I'm shooting about 95% digital with my own camera, after having borrowed an older digital from a friend for about a year to kind of learn the ropes. Now I consider myself a reluctant convert. I still use the AE1 for special occasions, though...like for portrait work, or when I REALLY want to capture motion. (Digital has way too many limitations for that.) The 1/60 shutter speed is my favorite. I like to reveal motion with varying amounts of blur. To me, and maybe I'm a total snob, but frozen motion is almost always boring... It's a pleasure to be able to view all the great photographs here, and interact with some wunderful people.
