Caption: Joseph Granger was born a Yankee in Wayne County New York in 1827. His wife Sarah Jane was a Texan, born during the old Republic's War for Independence from Mexico. During the War between the Confederate and United States Joseph Granger chose to stand with the State of Texas' War for Independence from the United States. His half brother on the other hand was Yankee general Gordon Granger who landed US troops to occupy Galveston at the end of the war. A freighter by trade he and his family moved to Fort Davis in 1884. The Yankee born Confederate Texan died in 1908. Marked by a US government Confederate veteran headstone Granger is the only soldier in Pioneer Cemetery, a Texas Historical Society spot. Blue Mountain, 7,300 ft above sea-level, is like a vanguard of the Davis Mountains (a range named for Private Granger's 1861-1865 commander-in-chief.
