Anchorage, AK (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: This is one of the 3 orphaned brown bear cubs that we are holding at the zoo until such time as we send them to their new home. They arrived at the zoo several days ago and today they let them out for the first time, in the middle of a pretty heavy snow squall. So much so that driving to the zoo I was in near white out conditions.

What a great opportunity for us to learn about this much loved - and feared - animal. He looks right at home in that powdery fluff! Kudos, and congrats on the Blue!

For others that are interested, the cubs will do just fine this winter, even without their mom. Between them they range from 99 to 125 pounds.

They are eating just fine with special diets prepared by the zoo staff.

I'll be checking in on them probably every day to document their outdoor play time.

If there are any other questions you might have feel free to email at:

Love the lump of snow on his nose. I, like Katy am curious about how cubs will do alone their first winter.

John how do you deal with orphaned cubs their first winter? Do you bottle feed them? Do they need to hibernate also?

What an interesting project. And a great photo!

About johngomes

johngomes

I retired as a police officer/crash rescue firefighter in April of 1990. I have enjoyed photography since the mid 70's and crossed over to the digital world in 1996. Along with being the volunteer photographer for the Alaska Zoo the main focus of my photography is to show Alaska as it passes in front of my lens on a day to day basis. While viewing my albums be sure to look for lnks to Britt Coon's Smug Mug albums. She is becoming a great photographer in her own right and it has been fun watching her develop her skills for the last couple of years that we have worked together. To view more of her work click here and visit her SmugMug album.
