Mt. Edgecumbe's crater, awash in fresh snow, was lit by the early morning sun today. Edgecumbe has not made many appearances lately, mainly due to low ceilings and visibilities associated with the eqinox storms off the Gulf of Alaska. When it does show up, it is a most pleasing site.
Have you heard the story about the people who, many years ago, hauled a bunch of old tires up to the crater, lit them on fire and started a small panic in Sitka when people there thought the mountain was on the verge of eruption? Funny story! Great picture of an awesome volcano!
Gorgeous! Due to the weather, I wasn't able to see Mt. Edgecumbe at all on a recent trip to Sitka. It looks amazing- thanks for sharing this beautiful photo.
