Anyone Know?

Mount Horeb, WI (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: Fast moving sun. This is the way the photo came from the camera and I'm not sure why the sun has a moving look to except for the fact it was moving. But with a very fast shutter speed hand held I can't see why it would appear to be moving. Anyone have any idea?

Lovely shot!
This does look like the beginning of a sun pillar.
Do you have a subsequent shot where the sun is below the horizon? (I take hundreds of shots, that is why I ask)
There is likely a trail of light above the sun. That would be a sun pillar.

Very cool. I have never seen anything quite like it. Even without that effect, it is an outstanding photo. But its presence makes it totally unique.

Maybe this will help with understanding.

Sun Pillars" Vertical shafts of light in the presence of ice crystals

You may also sometimes see them associated with street light or automobile headlights, when there are ice crystals of a certain type in the air.

Love how it looks like it's about to bash into the ground!

Beautiful shot! My guess is it's a sun pillar, due to alot of ice crystals in the air. Most of the sun pillars we see are after the sun has set, but this one showed up early!

About Vicki

Vicki

A self-taught photographer that was taught to see the beauty of this place I call home and to tread upon it lightly. I consider myself lucky to have grown up among the towering bluffs that surround the Wisconsin and Kickapoo Rivers. My favorite past-time has always been getting lost in the wooded hills and valleys of southwest Wisconsin. I have always wanted to share what I saw and felt in these places and photography opened that door. I work hard to capture the essence and emotion that come over me when I visit these places. Please enjoy my state.Vicki France
