Too Hot, Mom!

Westfield, NC (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: The three baby cardinals I rescued Friday from an ant attack appear to be doing well this morning. However, the near-100 degree heat is forecast to continue for several days yet, with no rain in sight. That has got to be stressful for poor critters like these who have no place to get away from the heat.

Thank you, Marijka! The mortality rate for baby songbirds of all sorts is extremely high during the first year. I do what I can to help, but only about 50% of the nests I find around my yard actually fledge birds, and of those who survive long enough to leave the nest, the loss rate is still very high for a few more weeks.
