Great catch on the Cottonmouth. But I don't like 'em, so you can take my place at being close. A definite 10+

Thanks Kathy and Rodney for the comments and the laugh. I was thinking there was something about their length being how far they could strike. Someone should have had a video on your Dad and his buddies, that would have been a hoot to see!

By far my least favorite snake. Too many bad run-ins as a youth. Very aggressive and nasty temperament. Always give them lots of room and a way to escape.

I have read that snakes cannot strike more than half their body length, thus two feet for a 4-foot snake, which this one did not appear to be that big. However, that doesn't take into account how fast they can move. Have read about cottonmouths' nasty temper, so would give them a wide berth.

My dad once told me about one that fell from a low branch into a small boat that he and a bunch of geese-hunting friends were about to climb into. One of the men, thinking to be a hero, grabbed a shotgun and dispatched the snake; unfortunately that did it for the boat as well.

LOL, Thanks Sharon for the comment! I was zoomed

This guy turned to go back into the ditch water
and I thought I've got to get a video first.
Had I even thought about it moving as fast as it
did, I might not have gotten as close as I did, lol.
Just a short video and he was gone.
