Caption: Springtime in the Smoky Mountains is so pretty, the maples and oak trees have fresh leaves that have almost the tint of autumn in gold and orangy hues. This is the high mountain lake deep in the Cherokee National Forest of Tennessee, near the North Carolina border. In the Chilhowee Recreation Area, this high spot overlooks the Ocoee River which hosted the 1996 Olympic kayaking competitions. This lake is next to the Chilhowee campgrounds and the trailhead that leads to Benton Waterfalls...
Image Description: Early springtime color in the trees is so similar to autumn shades. The new leaves of the maples and oaks are tinted gold and orange but the air has a freshness to it of new life. The lake at the Chilhowee Recreation Area is cold and clear, the morning so still, blue sky reflecting it's color in the pretty high mountain lake. The benches sit right at the edge of the lake on the beach. The trail alongside the lake leads to one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Cherokee National Forest of Tennesee, Benton Falls, an 80 foot cascade of pounding water over a glistening granite face...
