Valley Stream, NY (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: Everyone has seen photos of the damage inflicted by Hurricane Sandy that destroyed New Jersey, NYC, & Long Island as well as other areas on the East Coast. I am finally back on line after 4 days without power. It has been a long ordeal. My block was extremely fortunate. We didn't have any trees fall and no flooding but the entire area is devastated. This is a photo of a tree that fell between the street, smashed, the car, and blew out the tires. No one was hurt.

Hi Linda,
My husband and I walked around Abbot Blvd. in Ft. Lee and in areas of Cliffside Park. Your photo of the downed & uprooted tree mirrors what we saw. Lots of power lines down and most homes without service, too.

Frantic residents waited for gas for hours, either in cars or on line holding their empty gas containers. Curfew for pedestrians in Ft. Lee from 6PM to 6AM, as it was too dangerous to walk around.

We live in a 1 bedroom hi-rise on 26th Fl where we lost water and power, which included use of the elevators. 30 residents had their windows blown out. That was scariest for us, too, as our windows face East, but they didn't blow out.

Walked down and drove to nearby Leonia to get more water as elderly neighbor was panicking as she was running out. The walk up w. a couple of gallons of water took a lot longer. We got service back, a few hours after that climb. Three other bldgs. in our complex were out until Election Day.

Glad to hear that your block escaped devastation. My sister, in Knollwood Beach in Huntington, whose home faces Northport Bay, had significant damage as water came into her home during the surge. Perfect storm: A Nor'Easter storm, strong winds, huge surge, and full moon. YIKES!

Put your photo in my Favorites.
May the weather be milder. Cheers!

Like everyone else glad to hear you are OK, the road to recovery for all concerned will be long because of such a wide swathe of damage but it will happen. Maybe better sea defences will be constructed after this. Congrats on VIP & AC.

So happy you survived and esp. you have all those wonderful photo memories of those 'historical' sites. Having gone through Hurricane Andrew, I feel horribly for all the lives affected by this monster. We become amazingly strong and resourceful--but it's so difficult! Hang in there!! (great capture)

Linda, I hope you are heartened a bit by the long list of admirers above. Thankfully you are safe.
I have fond memories of Jones Beach as a kid. The boardwalk and the sports activities were well operated and maintained then. I am so sorry to hear you description of the damage.

Quoting teach50:
Long Beach, Jones Beach and the park where I take my sunset photos have been totally destroyed. Fire Island is destroyed and cut in two. The landscape of Long Island has been totally changed. The communities on the South Shore of Long Island are in ruins. On the North Shore of Long Island which faces Long Island Sound has been decimated.
The destruction in NYC is unreal as well as in New Jersey. Places that I have taken many of my photos are in ruins.
I have not had school all week. This is unprecedented.
We will rebuild.

I live in Point Pleasant Beach in the flood zone. East of the tracks has been with out power since Monday evening. A wise decision in my opinion. Many homes were flooded. Given the chance to dry out, some homes will not catch fire. Now the gas company is talking about down service......

Gosh, Linda, how awful! I feel so bad for you and everyone who had to go through this mess. I know it will take a very long time before rebuilding is complete, and in one sense it never will be, because you can replace buildings and trees, but can never make them as if this disaster hadn't occurred. Thank heavens you (and we) have your many photos to help us all remember the way things were. God bless you, my friend, and all who were affected by this superstorm!

"... and behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice."
