Fallstreak Hole (Wikipedia link) sometimes called HolePunch Cloud.

Great catch!

Ooops, I see Suzi46 beat me to it (You can replace "Link" with more detailed text).

I think Duane is right; a punch-hole formation caused by an airplane going through a thin layer of clouds. Interesting phenomenon and one I don't see often, certainly not large and clear like this. But as for the camera, I usually carry it with me even to go fetch the mail, but I can't tell you how many times I've missed a shot because I didn't. Can't run that fast any more, LOL!

thank you all SO MUCH for your kind and informative comments..and thank you Duane for that most interesting link and Maxim/Enigmas for your links as well!! I spotted this as I was walking up our long driveway and almost gave myself a heartattack running all the way back down to the house..into the house..up 2 flights of stairs..grabbing my camera..and then running back up the driveway to snap some shots..all the while Gene yelling at me to HURRY UP IT'S FADING AWAY!!! yikes..well, the sundog part did fade..but I did get the rest pretty well..so glad they came out so I could share with you! and thankyou Approvers for the Blue Border to match the sky :)

About suzi46

suzi46

Living in the mountains of Western Maine on a 15 acre 'gentleman's farm', in a hand hewn log home, has been a wonderful experience these past 6 1/2 years. But it was time to downsize and make a major lifestyle change..so that's what we did!! Going from the Mt Washington Valley region of Maine/NH all the way down to the "Horse Capital of the World"..Marion County in Central Florida! New photo ops in a totally new and intriguing area of this very large and varied state..let the fun begin!
