Brewster, MA (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: I don`t know what kind of snake this is. Doesn`t look like any snake I`ve seen around here before. Not the best shot, but maby someone here knows what it is. It came swimming directly towards me as I stood on the pavement! Wasn`t more than 3 feet long if that.

Looks somewhat like a Coral Snake but if you go by the rime, Red touches Black, he's a friendly Jack.Red touches Yellow, he's a deadly fellow.

As a general rule, there are no poisonous snakes in Maine. That does not eliminate a visitor from out of state. This is a type of King Snake...more specifically a milk snake. Protected everywhere. When dry, they are not as brightly colored as pictured. Good fried with grits..of, I forgot, they are protected.

Thank you, Sharon, Kathy and Wilma! Thanks for so quickly helping me out!

Wilma, I would have been afraid if I had been standing in the water.. I felt quite safe on land!!

Looks like a water moccasin snake to me, Dianne. Isn't it cool how you forget to be afraid, but are fascinated instead when there is a lens between you and your subject?

Looks like a King snake; there are several types of non-poisonous snakes showing more or less this color pattern.
