Forestville, NY (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: This is the first Monarch I've seen this year. Experts are saying that their numbers are down by 80% this year because of the drought and excessive heat during the summer of 2012. Only 60 million wintered in Mexico compared to the average of 350 million.

This news about the Monarchs is making me so sad. It is a symbol of the environmental and man-made damages to our ecosystems. Another reason I have read for the decrease in Monarchs is the herbicides applied to fields of "cash crops" to kill weeds on the large agri-farms in the mid-west. I hope we are not reading stories to our grand & great-grands about the beautiful Monarch who used to travel so very far.
