I remember reading about this last year. I found the info again and it is called mud-puddling: Males seem to benefit from the sodium uptake through mud-puddling behaviour with an increase in reproductive success. The collected sodium and amino acids are often transferred to the female with the spermatophore during mating as a nuptial gift. This nutrition also enhances the survival rate of the eggs.

Thanks for the comments. I have seen this type of butterfly congregation several times over the past week. Always at a muddy spot.

Neat shot! I saw similar view of yellow
swallowtails yesterday. So how do you explain
so many together? Do you think it is a bit
weird? I had never seen so many together before.
Nice capture!
