Ventress, LA (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: *'Dippin Dots'. So why did it look different? Well, I'd argue a lot of what we were calling sleet was,* according to Steve Caparotta our local meteorologist, *actually graupel...something fairly uncommon for our part of the world. Graupel essentially refers to snow crystals that have been coated with supercooled droplets of water that form a layer of ice over the snow crystal.* these are only a millimeter or two at most in size.

isn't it amazing? we hadn't had wintry precipitation in 4 years and now we've had 3 events so far this year! i'd never heard of graupel until this morning, but i didn't think these looked like snowflakes i remembered from long ago!

OMG Mara as soon as I saw this I thought "Mara's got GRAUPEL!" That's amazing, just amazing!

That's something that happens here quite often, but SHEESH I'm in Alaska and you're in LOUISIANA!

I am stunned, just stunned.
