Meadowlands, MN (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: This was so striking I stopped a couple different times to take photos to stitch together. They each had a different look to them, almost other-worldly. The only time we get these brilliant halos is when there are tons of ice in the frigid air. It was about 5 degrees above zero F. (-25 C.)

I haven't seen them very many times in my life, Max, and never had a camera before that would get decent pictures of it so it was neat to get this. I especially loved the clouds across the front of the sun---I liked the way they added a different look to it. :-)

You did good. I saw this when I was downtown running errands and even though I carry a small point & shoot with me, do you think I could find it?? Had to run home for the heavy equipment and then out of town to see it clearly, but by then it was almost done. This is what it looked like, the first time I had seen such a thing. 10 from SW Iowa

Susereign and haestahban~~Thank you SO much!! I liked this one the better of the two, especially with the clouds across the lower part. I had a ton of fun playing around with this photo, making it look like a sci-fi scene somewhere in outer space, but won't post them on here. :-)

Thanks so much, Eve! I've only ever seen a few of these full halos in my whole life---it was just a chance I was going somewhere so I was outside (don't go out much at -20 below zero!).

That's amazing. Great shot! The only time I've seen these is from an airplane.

Oh, hey, we're getting a little taste of some *real* winter here. :D

10s and 20s during the day, maybe 0s to 10s at night. Just got some nice fluffy snow, nothing like the Snowpocalypse, but a bunch.

And yeah, as predicted, everyone here's running around in a panic like it's Fimbulvetr or something.

Like, "Oh my God! Water outside is actually turning... *solid*!! The end is near!!".

Feh.

About minnesotamom

minnesotamom

Hi! My name is Kathy and I live in northern Minnesota, USA, where the winter temps have dipped down to -60º below zero F. The summers used to be mild but in recent years have been up in the 90ºs. I love being able to travel the world from my office chair, through all your great photos! I've learned tons about photography and editing photos thanks to all the great people on here and their willingness to share tips. Thank you to all you Wunderfriends who take time to look and leave notes---I deeply appreciate it. :-)/>free hit countersCreate your own visitor map!
