Quoting ILLINILASS:
DO YOU SEE THE AURORAS VERY OFTEN IN MICHIGAN? WHAT TIME OF YEAR IS THE BEST VIEWING TIME?
Hopefully mactoot won't object to me chiming in on this one. I live in Escanaba, in the U.P. of Michigan. Auroras are common here durring solar maximum, which we are on the back side of now. However, bright overhead displays that dance like curtains are a relatively rare occurrence even at solar maximum. It takes about a kp 6 before the show gets good, which has been happening only a couple times per month lately. As for best time of year, I'm not concerned with that nearly as much as I am with solar activity levels, but I guess if I had to choose a time to look for the aurora I would pick fall. In fall the days are short and clouds are typically few.

Great series, and congrats on the VIP! Way to capture the display! I was watching them from Escanaba. Unfortunately I live on the south side of town, so I have an entire city of light pollution to deal with. I need a kp 6 or greater to drive them overhead before I get much of a show at my house.
