Thank you again, Katy - I'll immediately order a set of extension tubes :-)
Now the only thing we are lacking here is snow!
Must be one of the warmest winters here in Germany - so far (one of my photos from 27th of december).

Have a wonderful sunday!

Andrea I'm not sure, but I do know that the snowflake is much larger on the photo with each extension tube added. I've never tried all three, but I'm thinking it would fill the frame. These have been cropped a bit, maybe 20%.

So yes, the magnification is greater. Maybe this will help: Extension tubes explained on wikipedia Perhaps look into the references at the bottom of that page (isn't that what every true nerd does? :) I do)

Thanks, Katy!
So with those extension tubes you won't get larger images than the 100mm's usual 1:1? That snowflake in your picture looks as if being magnified?

Thanks Peter and Leelee!

Andrea (looking at my macro extension tubes) my extension tubes are Vivitar, with electrical contacts, I don't remember the price but I'm thinking they were around $80, not cheap, but manageable. (and worth it!) I have 13mm, 21mm and 31mm.

I was advised that the 100mm lens would allow me to be further from my subject (a bug or bee might not want me very close) and I like that.

Congratulations on such a fine AC!

Quoting katy99780:

Yes Kevin I'm using a 100mm macro lens, with two macros extension tubes (might be 7mm and 13mm) and a macro light ring (and tripod). The lens was expensive, but the gadgets (accessories) were very affordable.

All the little 'tricks' to make it easy enough for me to handle it.

Wow, now that's interesting! I've been thinking again and again about buying Canon's MP-E 65mm 1:2,8 which magnifies things up to 5:1. So far I didn't want to spend that much money on such a special lens.

Your way to shoot extreme closeups sounds so much easier! I have the 100mm lens too. Do you use Canon's macro extension tubes or do you get these fine results with a cheaper product?

Have a nice day!
Andrea

Wow!

Wonderful shot, Katy!

I am guessing you are using a 100mm macro lens? That must be a lot easier than a 300mm prime (what I use) with a closeup lens. 200mm is much easier, but I didn't like the quality of the 70-300mm lens I used to have.

You do great with that lens you have.

Thanks Eileen and Sharon. I sure do like it when this kind of flake 'happens!' I love the clear, clean plates.

It is so fascinating to see the layers, the depth, in a tiny fraction of space.
