Roadside 'Attraction'

Tok, AK (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: A small band of female caribou were licking road salt, so of course it took me quite awhile longer to get home. :)

These are all females, by their spindly antlers (bulls have shed their bigger, heavier antlers by now) and the smaller, light-weight bodies. Only pregnant females keep their antlers over winter, until almost the moment of calving.

Thanks Maxine and Julie!

Yeah Julie, is a bit of a hazard, especially since we now have so many dark hours.

Nice pic. Katy. Those Bou look kind of skinny. Do you suppose they had kind of a tough summer?

I've lived in Alaska since 1969. I love this wild land. The extremes of the far north shape and affect every living thing. Extremes of weather, elevation, daylight hours, isolation, flora and fauna, nothing in Nature is insignificant.I have a Davis Vantage Pro weather station, uploading to Wunderground, (Turks on the Tundra) the National Weather Service, the Citizen Weather Observation Program and MADIS (Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System).
