I love all Aurora's, but the little movies are very, very cool. I so wish I could take a shot like this.

Thanks Dave and Laura.

Laura these were 20-sec exposures, with maybe a second in between. About as fast as I could trip the shutter. I'd like to be able to use less time, so the transitions would be smoother, but... that's as fast as I could go.

You're setting a high standard for GIFs Katy. How long was the entire sequence? (just so we know how fast these lights are waving at us).

Cindy it's a gif file, a series of (20 in this case) still photos taken in rapid succession, and put together rather like a slide show.

Wunderground doesn't allow movies, but they do allow gifs, and actually that's the best way to show motion of aurora, as the 'real-time' motion would be so slow.

Super, thank you for sharing, is this a movie or a movie made of several photos?

I've lived in Alaska since 1969. I love this wild land. The extremes of the far north shape and affect every living thing. Extremes of weather, elevation, daylight hours, isolation, flora and fauna, nothing in Nature is insignificant.I have a Davis Vantage Pro weather station, uploading to Wunderground, (Turks on the Tundra) the National Weather Service, the Citizen Weather Observation Program and MADIS (Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System).
