Caption: This is indeed the red flower exploded outward and it reminds me of a pink Hostess Snowball cake. I didn't see anything half way between these flowers so maybe it bursts out very quickly. Might be fun to watch.

Photo taken today in southern Illinois. I notice most of the thistle pics I've seen have a bulb just below the flower and I don't recall seeing that on these flowers. I'll have to go back for a second look.

Looks like some type of thistle all right but depending on where the shot was taken will determine what variety of thistle this is.

Beautiful - judging by the thorns, some kind of thistles? Where are you located?

Looks close to a Plumeless Thistle (Carduus).
