Dunno why the location is off, I put the GPS thingy right on La Jolla. The green flash is real, tho not like in the Pirate movie. There are other variations of color that a guy has put on his website.

I looked through several very poor quality videos on YouTube before coming up with this good one. Watch closely toward the end, when it appears the top of the sun is lifting off; the flash happens three separate times.

I've only heard about it but never seen it myself. Supposedly more common when it's colder i.e winter time. Here (central OR coast) they call it 'the emerald flash', I'm still waiting to capture it. Great capture! Lucky you!

I sought it last night...where in CA was this taken? I was in San Simeon last night when I got a decent sunset shot, but no green flare. Thank you so much for posting this. :) Glad to see it is real.

Apr 17, '12. Been here on WU since '03 and am still amazed at the bounty that the photo world has to offer. I did a year as an approver, that was sometimes very tough. We had a few misfits that wanted things not in the WU 'guidelines' and would not take NO for an answer. Hopefully those times are long gone. Thank you all for helping my WU experience be Wunderful.
