Although based in England, I did some agronomy work in that area of New Zealand in December 2000, combining work with holiday. (Life is hard and someone has to do these jobs!). The soils are uniquely volcanic in nature, being light, free-draining, and very fertile – just the sort of ground you’d give your right arm to farm. Most of the early potatoes were the variety Ilam Hardy, and there is a good a chance that this is just what these are.

Before I read your comment, I thought...looks like potatoes to me. Dug many rows of taters in NC growing up. Great perspective, excellent photo.

Goodness gracious me! Thank you everyone. :-) That makes getting lacerated by blackberries worthwhile.

Cowgazer - I am sure none of these will rot.

buckley108 you are definitely right about the volcanic soil - marvellous stuff and probably right about the crop.

Susan - they are spuds.

I was out for a bike ride and went past here. I thought that it would make a great shot on my way back.

Thank you Approvers.

Looks like things are greening up pretty good there in New Zealand John. How does it feel being on the bottom or the world.
