Just in time for Trick or Treat.

It looks like someone dropped a confection.

Isn't it amazing what you can find when you're looking for something to shoot? I sure notice the beautiful details of nature much more when I have a camera in hand.

Hi everyone... Thanks for the fun and interesting comments, and the AC.
I followed the link in the comment below. There is erroneous information on that link.

This mushroom does NOT have a bad smell.
It just smells like a mushroom.
And, to get these shots, I had to get down on the ground, and right up close.
I touched them, and got the "blood" on me... No smell. Just orange colored fingers, and a pink splotch on my jeans. All of it washed off within a day.
I have watched this patch for new bloom, since last year, when I found a late example that was past this stage.
Even this summer, when I took a stick and pierced the old stump, and, what looked like black shiny blood ran out... I detected no smell.
Mushroom observer is the site I use to identify what I find. I also use Wikipedia for in depth info.

According to the Mushrooms-r-us page it is edible... meaning it is not poisonous. However, it does not smell or taste good. I'd stick with Baskin Robbins.

All the series are interesting, but this one is magnificent. Not sure whether it's ice cream & strawberries or something more sinister. I also had to look it up. Don't think I'd want to taste it, even though it's not poisonous. A well-deserved AC.

Great macro of this truly odd mushroom.
Don't think I'd want to taste it, however.

Congratulations on your AC.

Thanks everyone, for the lovely comments.
This mushroom is not deadly poisonous, but it IS
very bitter, and not "edible".
The "blood" also has a human blood thinning effect, similar to Heparin.

Absolutely fascinating, Laurel! Are they rare? Non-poisonous, presumably, if they are used for dye.
