Boscobel, WI (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: The hills and valleys of the Kickapoo River Valley in southwest Wisconsin. No saturation or vibrance added. We kept hearing reports that due to the severe drought over the summer that this years colors would not be good...we'll let me tell you something....this has been the best year in a long time.

I don't think anybody knows what makes for a "good color" year. Every time I hear that it's gonna be good or bad, it turns out the opposite. Of course, where I live (east central Georgia), we don't have much color to speak of--so I stare with deep envy at all these gorgeous images from more northern climes

It seems semi true here in MN. The drought has really intensified some colors and dulled others. In particular ash trees have really stood out to have the most vivid yellows I've seen in a long time. Some ash trees even showed a bit of orange, which is different.

Dulled by the drought: Box elders, yellow maples, aspens. From a distance they may look okay but up close you see the leaves turned brown all over the edges.

Elms - not sure, but a lot of them look wilted long before they started to change.

Red and orange maples seem a bit of a mix. Some are dull and some turned out vibrant. It seems the ones in the boulevards show the most colors. The ones in park areas and along the Mississippi river seemed kind of drab.

I wish I could say the same as you. Alot of our leaves are dropping a dirty green color from no rain. We did have over an inch yesterday but it is too late for the leaves and some of the state had that "s" word for a while. This is a great shot and I really am enjoying others fall colors.

Also the driest summer in many years. So much for experts.

Quoting BettyFrance:
Ohhhh, I miss my old Kickapoo Valley. Flatlands just don't quite have it.  Lakes are nice, but people buy it all up and then the public has no access to even look at it.  Rivers and valleys were free. Lakes here, you have to buy a $500000 or more house to see a lake when you want to.

I have heard the same thing, Vicki, that leaf colors are better following a year of plentiful rainfall, but like you, find that in my experience, the opposite is usually true. Beautiful image; now all it needs is a blue border, and I hope it gets one!

Update: That was quick! Congratulations!

About Vicki

Vicki

A self-taught photographer that was taught to see the beauty of this place I call home and to tread upon it lightly. I consider myself lucky to have grown up among the towering bluffs that surround the Wisconsin and Kickapoo Rivers. My favorite past-time has always been getting lost in the wooded hills and valleys of southwest Wisconsin. I have always wanted to share what I saw and felt in these places and photography opened that door. I work hard to capture the essence and emotion that come over me when I visit these places. Please enjoy my state.Vicki France
