Breaking Ice

Uploaded by: ThunderBev

Thursday April 3, 2014

Mohawk, MI (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: With Lake Superior 96% frozen this winter, the US Coast Guard Cutter Alder tackles the ice in the Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada harbour. Three US Coast Guard icebreakers are tackling ice 2 - 3 feet thick, while Canadian Coast Guard ice breakers tackle the far eastern entrance to this Great Lake. Out in the middle of the lake they are reporting ice and ice ridges 6 to 8 feet thick. Lake Superior rarely freezes like this ... bringing shipping to a halt as icebreakers are needed to escort ships.

Thanks for the shot of the giant's head Bev. I haad wondered about your winter. One year when I worked in the P>U>C> building, I watched the ice breakers going through the ice which was 18 miles out and I had heard this year was almost to 100% We have had a LONG miserable winter too and 15 inches of new snow last week alone though the past couple of days have been above freezing. thanks again for the shot.

We live down river....fearful all this ice coming down will disrupt ferry path to "our" island. :)

A hazy evening photo from maybe a mile away ... trying to show what"spring" is like as an ice breaker tries to make it through the unusually thick ice. I'm not a professional photographer and sometimes I just want to share what's happening in our part of the world. Like today ... more snow ... in our coldest, snowiest, winter ever.

You're a little out of focus. Did you mean to do that?

About ThunderBev

ThunderBev

I have lived in Northwestern Ontario all my life, and think I am very lucky! In addition to fresh air and changing seasons, there is the opportunity to attempt to catch the beautiful scenery on camera. I say 'attempt', because a picture is not worth a thousand words... the reality can take your breath away. I have always been a shutterbug, however owning a digital camera and discovering Wunderground has motivated me even more. Create your own visitor map!
