Caption: Spotted this bear on the side of the highway ... It was very thin. I wonder if it was a female with new babies ... or just a young'un who hasn't had enough to eat yet this spring.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments.

Black bears are beautiful animals and I'm very lucky to live in a part of the world where they're our neighbours. While our city and the surrounding towns have some issues with "nuisance" bears... for the most part our landscape is big enough for us all!

I consider myself fortunate to be able to photograph bits and pieces of this great landscape ... and share them with you!

Very striking photo of this beautiful black bear. I hope it's eating enough and is not sick. It's a fabulous looking animal, and your shot is marvelous!!!

Maybe it has some illness or a heavy load of parasites. If you're not feeding it, and I certainly hope no one else is, I wouldn't worry about its becoming dependent on people. As I'm sure you know, it is no kindness to feed wild bears; it helps turn them into problem animals that often end up getting shot or trapped out. In any case, great picture and congrats on the AC!

Quoting NatureGirlsBabies:
I so wish I could see one of these in the wild. I hope it gets some food soon. Probably just work up.

they've been awake for some time up here. We had an early spring and that may be part of the issue. Even though our vegetation is about 2 weeks ahead of normal we're still quite a while away from berry time. It was eating flowers as I watched.

My other concern is that as it was too familiar with me and my SUV that it might be relying on human food and be reluctant to actually hunt for wild food itself.

In my part of the world (Northwestern Ontario) there are plenty of wild resources so really skinny bears like this are unusual. (But they are still so majestic to see!)

About ThunderBev

ThunderBev

I have lived in Northwestern Ontario all my life, and think I am very lucky! In addition to fresh air and changing seasons, there is the opportunity to attempt to catch the beautiful scenery on camera. I say 'attempt', because a picture is not worth a thousand words... the reality can take your breath away. I have always been a shutterbug, however owning a digital camera and discovering Wunderground has motivated me even more. Create your own visitor map!
