St. Augustine, FL (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: This classic anvil and rolling thunder are from a rapidly developing afternoon thunderstorm over Florida's Intracoastal Waterway. You can see the warm wind picking up speed in the palm trees, and blowing towards the storm's core as it develops. The 950nm infrared shows the detail and contrast of the storm and anvil. - St. Augustine FL

Hi luvne32 - Thanks for the kind words, and I'm an IR fan too. Your BW shot is great and the rain rings are so clear in the water. It's fun comparing your BW and color versions. Congratulations on your AC, it was an instant "Favorite", and thanks for uploading:)

Hi Skyepony - Thanks for including this photo in your blog.

Hi gardner48197 - Infrared light (Near Infrared) is just past red on the visible light spectrum, and our eyes cannot see it. Some digital camera image sensors can see infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV), along with visible light. To see IR, a special filter is used that blocks visible/color light along with UV light, while allowing infrared in. ("Far Infrared" is heat, and requires a different camera.)

IR reflects and absorbs light differently than standard color/visible light. Plant leaves come out light gray to white, while blue skies, water and asphalt are dark to almost black. It has great detail in dark shadows, producing the classic IR glowing look (like the palm tree trunks). It's best in the bright noonday sun, and in high-contrast situations like photographing under a bridge on a sunny day. It's a fun science kind of thing, and it can be difficult setting up the camera to take IR. The filter is almost black, so if your camera doesn't have an IR setting, it's a lot like taking a night shot, with long exposures.

The infrared makes it look like a moonlit scene... only brighter...

Great stuff. Thanks for reminding us there's more polychromatic is not the only way to go...

Not sure what all of the infrared talk is about..? Is that a software, or camera feature?

Nice BW choice of light and dark. I have also been inspired to try infrared lately, and will upload a few results.
Keep it up with the B&W. Not many here do it.

It was lots of fun watching this beautiful storm grow. What's interesting is because the sun was fairly high, the infrared version showed all the detail, while the color version fell flat. Every year, I look forward to the beautiful summer thunderstorms, and the awesome lightning photos other photographers post on Wunderground.

Love the contrast that you get from the infared! Also sets a somber mood for the image.
