Fairbanks, AK (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: On a crystal clear morning, usually the mountains would be crisp and sharp against the blue sky. However, wildfires burning in the interior add haze. This fire is near Fairbanks; photo taken on the Parks Highway.

My brother got caught up in such a fire once while driving his motor home N. of Fairbanks - fortunately he had a CB radio and was able to follow a semi truck to safety. Nice photos and commentary everybody!

Katy, be careful, okay? BTW, in 2007 we drove up to Chicken and could not believe the miles and miles of burnt forest between Tok and Chicken. Amazing.

Hi Suzie! I am currently assigned to this fire! Up to just over 12,000 acres mapped yesterday.

Gils fires in Arizona have charred over 300 square miles....!

Canuckjune, Alaska typically has a million or more acres burn each summer, just a few years ago 7,000,000 acres burned. Many many miles of black spruce forests, low rainfall and lightning make for perfect wildfire conditions. Along with very sparsely populated (or totally unpopulated) expanses, many if not most of Alaska's wildland fires are not fought, but left to complete the natural cycle.

I must bemore naive than I thought but it surprises me that a stet with the snow Alaska has already has fires. All we have here is enough water for about half of the US. Guess there is something everywhere this year. Arlene
