Tufa is essentially common limestone. What is uncommon about this limestone is the way it forms. Typically, underwater springs rich in calcium (the stuff in your bones) mix with lakewater rich in carbonates (the stuff in baking soda). As the calcium comes in contact with carbonates in the lake, a chemical reaction occurs resulting in calcium carbonate--limestone. The calcium carbonate precipitates (settles out of solution as a solid) around the spring, and over the course of decades to centuries

Thanks for dropping by Wilma, Katy, Gil and Tom. Katy no water entry - it is many times more salty than the ocean and has a high concentration of many chemicals including arsenic. We call this type of lakes without an outlet "Sinks" or "Alkali Puddles" - Mono lake is a special lake in it's own - Google it for a lot more info.

Of travels I have made, Mono Lake is one of my favorites and you prove why with the contrasts of the textures of the weathered limestone and the mirrored water. Congratulations on a beautiful AC!
