I shoot directly into the sun quite frequently and don't notice any damage, either.

Both cameras have thousands of sun shots and don't seem to be affected. I'm sure it doesn't do them any good. Guess I've just been lucky!!

No, just fast shutter and hazy evening. If the air is too dry, it is too bright, but a lot of smoke or dust in the air acts like a filter. Of course it also messes up my moon shots. The moon has to be high in the sky to get rid of the filter effect of early evening lately.
