Keyes, OK (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: He showed up on Saturday afternoon and sat on the trellis, outside the kitchen window, while I washed dishes. Too bad I hadn't washed my dirty window that morning! I don't know my Hawks, if Eileen, or anyone else can identify him. I thought he was a Kestrel, when he first appeared, due to his small size.

Great capture! Your bird is a merlin, all right, our second smallest falcon, easily mistaken for a kestrel at a distance. A bird not easily caught on camera!

I greatly appreciate your WONDERFUL visits and LOVELY comments, Picatso (I LOVE your delightful handle!) and Liz! You both Bless my day!

Thank you SO much for the link, Picatso! I think you are correct! It was fascinating to learn, as I knew next to nothing about Merlins and then to think I had one looking at me from 10 feet away. Thanks again!!

What a lovely friend to have outside your kitchen window!
I think Merlin might be the answer - here is the Merlin page at All About Birds (Cornell Lab of Ornithology) Link
Thank you!

You are SO sweet, Trudy and really make me smile. No unfortunately, I can't mention, without embarrassment, how seldom I do wash my kitchen window! :) Thanks very much for your wonderful, as always, comments.

Hi Eileen! I knew you would give me much help! :) Yes, he's definitely not a Kestrel. We have quite a few of those around. I thought he might be a Juvenile, as he had a Baby look to his face. I will go look up Merlin's and check with Gale, when I get a chance. Thank you!!

How sweet!
I wonder if this could be a Merlin.
Kestrels have other colors and stronger markings within 6 months of hatching, so I'm sure this is not a Kestrel.
I bet Novembergale could help with the ID.
