Caption: I have never attempted to shoot hummingbirds before - keep in mind they are about 2" long, VERY fast, and the nest is smaller than a golf ball. Practicing my patience!

I'd give this entire series a 20 if I could, but gave it an inadequate 10. Longstanding hummer relationship here, & my Indian name, gifted to me many years ago, is Tanagila Wiyan, Hummingbird Woman in Lakota. My JOY. Thank you for these precious images, they also are a gift.

I am responding on this image as it us the Series Cover and an Approver's Choice. I have been pleased as the response to my efforts in the past but today I am overwhelmed - to the votes and comments on this entire series.

I have a list of about 100 people I sent Picasa or email images (my Photo List) and they got about 20 pix. I chose these to submit just on a whim. They really thought they were great but this response here just blows me away; much more meaningful as I know none of you personally.

A friend of mine told me about the nest in his yard on an occotillo cactus; they saw it first out their side window of the house.

I shot these images at 200mm and some cropping of course. I have made 4 trips there and shot maybe 200 images. Never have tried this before.

I am a hobbyist / semi- pro photo guy (hey, someone wants to pay for a pic I am not dumb!) but never have had a lesson and read only one small book on composition a couple of years ago. As my bio says, this kinda serious work is only a few years old.

Thank you once again - think I will buy my good wife dinner tonight to celebrate.

Lauren

I know exactly how hard these tiny, fast little critters are to get in focus! And the nest too!! A great collection of photos. They are all fantastic. 10++ from SW Iowa

About Lauren517

Lauren517

I took early retirement (age 55) from a corporate sales / marketing career in 1995. My wife (now 51 years of marital bliss!), Barbara, and I then built our dream home in Estes Park, CO only to realize we could not live at 8,000' as a base elevation (though we hiked regularly at 10-12,000' and up to 14,000'). So in the spring of 2003 we sold it and built a home at Quail Creek at 3000' in Sahuarita, AZ - just south of Tucson; near the Santa Rita Mountains. Due to a hiking fall in 2008, and subsequent re-constructive shoulder surgery, the "no more golf" mandate brought me back to my photography. God works in mysterious ways!I use PhotoShop minimally; enhance but not create as I say. Want people to see what I saw as I pretty much saw it. I have been blessed to have been asked to do one person gallery exhibits and am frequently published in magazines and newspapers.Although I sell my images, the real reward is the joy I am told I bring to others with my efforts. My motto is, "Shoot The Shot The Others Did Not!"
