Caption: As I am taking photos, I hear this noise up river. “Hum”, says I. Then about an acre of ice starts heading right for me. It was so big I thought I was moving! Well I’m not too worried, I am behind this enormous log. That’s when the cracking started. Right before my eyes the huge log bursts in half and starts coming right for my light stand! Arrgggghhh! Quick like a bunny I grabbed the light stand and yank it out of the water. But I am still a photographer, so the whole time I am doing this, I keep my finger on the shutter button and have an entire series of photos taken while the log is breaking up! I made a short movie out of it but I don't know how to upload a movie Very exciting.

A friend of mine read my account of this adventure and wrote a poem about it. I quote;

Very cool story...and well told. But just as any cop knows, the River has it's OWN side of the story........Here goes:

I'm the majestic Platte River, filled with history and well traveled through time;
The stories about me can fill books, sing lyrics and rhyme.

Although my beauty is public for all to view and give thanks;
Most of my tales remain secrets within my banks.

So on this evening I was cold, even frozen in part;
Under a spectacular sunset, vibrant colors of art.

This scene was such a gem, a treasure well kept on a shelf;
For a moment I stopped flowing simply to admire myself.

In the twist of my coil, during convergence of play
I caught a glimmer of action out 'oer the way,

An persistant admirer of mine, a craftsman of perspective;
He was gathering his tools, methodical... like a detective.

The wise one had returned to capture me this night;
He'd done this before, and done so with delight.

He prepared with precision and moved like a shrew;
I began feeling mischevious, like rivers sometimes do.

With nary a swell to be seen, I wiggled but twice;
I sent a shot from my bow, a jagged barge of ice,

It cracked as it left, then amplified with ease;
My aim was on target, toward recently downed trees.

As my cold waters churned from beneath with deceipt;
I watched my admirer scurry and stumble on his feet.

Previously so quiet as his encounters were without failure;
He was now grimmacing, gasping and cussing like a sailor.

The largest of timbers splintered before him with force;
With violence and destruction like the Viking tales of Norse.

He may proclaim he snapped shots all during the scurry;
But The Platte declares victory with only a smidgeon of my fury!!!

Taking photos, and even more so looking for subjects, can be dangerous sometimes. I have to tell myself to keep my eyes on the road when I am driving and not look for a nice subject to shoot.

WELL LARRY???! YOU HAVE OUTDONE YOURSELF IN THIS IMAGE! And what's totally cool as well,,is that Maxine,and I shared this same sky with you tonite,out at the pond,,but you have way surpassed our adventure,for one,,this image is totally over the top ten gorgeous,,and two,,you accomplished something in a scary way,and lived to tell the tale [of course,,WE would not want to have something like that happen to us,,so,we don't envy you that,,just to clear that 'two' issue up,lol!] When I saw this on the A/C boards,I knew it had to be someone like you or Ruralartist,,Maxine told me about how you three came up with the 'Missouri Valley,East,West,etc' rather triangulating our area....very neat! You best be figuring out how to join up with us,,,we want to meet you down here in Shenandoah!! :) CONGRATULATIONS SIR!!! STUPENDOUS A/C CAPTURE! Be SAFE!!!!-Mindi

I would love to know what you think of the GIF. Somehow I must have disabled comments for that photo and I don't want to mess anything up by going back and reloading it. I had enough trouble figuring out how to get it there the first time. The GIF showes the breakup of the log.

I sure was spectacular. Even without my extra excitment. When it was over, I was kind of let down, like after a good fireworks show, I just wanted a little more.

I can't belive how warm it is. We have lost almost all the snow cover. And the ice on the river is thin and spotty, more like spring!

I was going to go out on the lake ice tomorrow morning, but after seeing the river ice, no way.

About LarryD

LarryD

I really enjoy this site. The wonderful photos I see here never cease to amaze, and inspire me. I look forward to reading the comments on my photos. I am inordinately pleased when I am awarded an Approvers Choice. I use Nikon equipment and am especially fond of macro photography. I continue to be astounded by the beauty in the miniature world visible though my lens. Additionally, I rarely have to venture very far to find interesting subjects.The Henry Doorly zoo is my favorite location. If you get to Omaha Nebraska. I highly recommend you spend some time at the zoo with your camera. Larry
