Wow; I thought this was a flood photo from the thumbnail, and though it is, it is also a winter photo. Talk about a picture saying a thousand words! Do you know if this is a rooftop from a home, and if so, if the home's people got out all right? What a chilling thought, to have one's home not only swept away in a flood, but also frozen in place, mid-river, for many months! - Julie in Ohio

Yes, it's frozen in place after the floods of this fall. The home was abandoned before the river took it.
The Matanuska River is eroding the banks and where it used to be 1/2 mile away from homes, it's now too close.

Is the river getting larger because of extra glacial melt?

Hi wodenite; not due to glacial melt, but being a braided river, it changes and creates channels. This fall, the extra heavy rainfall caused additional flooding and the high water cut away the river banks quite quickly. I'm not a geologist, but years of watching the river change, and reading about it, as well, is what I've based this on.
