Elliston Straight Stretch at Night

elliston, va,

Caption: Rain moving in tonight means the last night for stars here for a while. Even though it's been a long weekend of shooting I decided to head out to catch the last few hours of stars.

Thanks!

You need to adjust your F-stop and ISO so that the headlights aren't overpowering but you can still see stars. You can shoot a couple of quick test shots before you commit to the long one. When your test shots look like white headlight streaks with very little light on the shoulder and the stars a little white pins you're good to go.

The nice part about very long exposures is that if you get your starting point close it's very tough to blow out the photo because to go up 1 stop of light you have to double the exposure time. So if I let this image go 50 minutes it would be just a little brighter with trails twice as long.

Hope that helps! :)

I love this one Jon! So you set your camera up, locked the shutter release cord, and took 23 minutes of exposure? Would that not blow-out your roadway and all? I love this technique and would LOVE to try it myself. Keep 'em coming! Celebrating life, Debra

Precise. The color trails of the stars always fascinates me. Red-shift/ blue-shift? thanks

Yep. I sat the tripod up on the grassy median and then basically took a short nap in my car. ;)
