Kalamata, Greece

Caption: We crossed the Taygetos to Gythio on Friday. It is a good drive and takes you from sea level to about five thousand feet and back down again. It is even almost cool at the top, but not quite, and you really do feel the heat when you reach the sea again. At about three thousand feet we stopped to exercise the dogs and found these Grizzled Skipper butterflies. They are only about 20mm (three quarters of an inch) across but they are beautifully marked. They were competing with the bees for the pollen in the thistles but there should have been enough for everyone.

It's interesting, Alan, how one person noticing something that may seem nondescript to others, makes a person take a 2nd look and start seeing a quiet beauty they didn't notice in the search for the gaudy. Thanks for 'noticing', and making us take that 2nd look. :)

About Granddad

We are English, (except our dogs, who are definitely very Greek, having been abandoned strays who took us in out of the kindness of their hearts). We retired to Greece in 2003 to escape the phoney political correctness endemic throughout the Anglo-Saxon world and to mix with some real people again. We live in the Exo-Mani in the extreme South of the Peloponnesus, where the sea and countryside are beautiful and the weather is also less political (i.e. they don't tax sunshine yet). The site provides an opportunity for us to bore the whole world with our snapshots and for which we are duly grateful.
