Sunrise sundog 1/4 mile away

Uploaded by: CythiaSue

Thursday December 5, 2013

South St. Paul, MN (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: This sundog formed just 1/4 mile away over the Mississippi River this is the West side of the sundog. Many times we see sundogs in the far distance - yet given the right conditions sundogs can be very close.

Kathy the sun is over to the left in this shot if it were a rainbow the red would be on the other side. In a sundog the red is always closest to the sun. In a rainbow when it arches to left the red is on the right (the red is on the top curve of the arc, so it is just opposite a sundog. :)

Quoting ChrisAnthemum:
Looks more like a rainbow. Fortunate capture and beautiful shot, Cynthia!

Yes, and it takes two windows to view this, one to the east and this one was taken out the south door. This one most likely drops right down to the Mississippi River just 1/4 mile away. With -2 degree's this is far from a rainbow yet close, it's a sundog formed in by the frozen crystals of moist air above the Mississippi River. Love the winter by water and I hope to post more sundogs, tomorrow will be another below zero morning. The wide lens is at the ready.
