Yes horizontal snow is always more interesting, only problem is it got blown into the log store, almost a foot deep in there. Thanks for commenting

Pardon my ignorance, but is a "log store" the same as what we call a wood shed? Or something else?

yip that's a Cabbage Palm, unless they get frozen to the core they get through pretty well. In 2010 many were killed back by our worst Winter for 40 years, but when cut back to a stump they come again from below ground, often with multiple stems.

Thanks for the info, Peter. What an amazing plant!! I did a bunch of research on Cordyline Australis and discovered (among lots of other great articles online) this bit from Wikipedia:
"It is also widely planted in western Europe and the Northwest coast of the United States. It is particularly popular in Britain, where it is thought to resemble a palm tree. Cabbage trees can grow well as far north as western coast of Scotland, in places where the Gulf Stream tempers the climate, including the village of Plockton. It is more common in Southern England, and in Ireland. It is locally named Cornish palm, Dracaena palm, Manx palm, or Torquay/Torbay palm in the British Isles. The last name is due to its extensive use in Torbay, it being the official symbol of that area, used in tourist posters promoting South Devon as the English Riviera. It also grows in Spain, Italy and Japan. Even though the natural distribution of C. australis ranges from a subtropical to a mid-latitude , and despite its ultimately tropical origins, it also grows at about five degrees from the Arctic Circle in Masfjorden, Norway, latitude 61 degrees N, in a microclimate protected from arctic winds and moderated by the Gulf Stream."
WOW!! :-)

About Cowgazer
Cowgazer I am Peter, brought up in the center of Manchester, UK. But was a square peg in a round hole there, worked 33 years as stockman in dairy farming then made redundant. Luckily got a job managing a garden nursery for a couple of years, but had to leave as tenancy came to an end. Couldn't find work so relocated to Wales and am now a self-employed gardener, great move, good things come out of hard times. Digital tech has made photography affordable to me and I love it, compliments my walking and Birdwatching. At present on a steep learning curve, new things are always good, stretch your mind and keep you sane-ish.
