Westfield, NC (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: One egg case of praying mantises must have hatched while I wasn't looking; by the time I noticed it, all that was left was the hanging 'sawdust' left from the little insects' emergence. But don't worry; I have several more of these yet to hatch; the cold spring has delayed them.

Thanks for your additional comments, Mary! If you want any for this year, don't delay; they're only seasonally available.

I didn't see them in WI either when I lived there. The only time I saw one was when someone showed one off in a container. I think they must had been on a family trip or very lucky.

I'm tempted to get some. It may be a nice fun thing for the flower garden in our apartment garden. Though I'm not against using systemics and chemicals when needed, I would like trying some natural predators for bug control.

I'm afraid you do, Mary -- I never saw them when I lived in the Twin Cities area. However, you can buy the egg cases from science supply houses, and hatch the young indoors. That way you would get to see them first hand.

I did find one baby mantis today which I photographed; comin' right up.

Bummer. They look so cute young. I wish I could see them, but I think I must live too far North for them.

Glad you aren't creeped out by this, Julia! I have 8 other egg cases on my porch plus one I left in the bush, all due to hatch any day now. Thanks for your comment!

I'll keep watching for your hatchings.

This is truly interesting.

Thanks, Cynthia! This is what the hatch looked like last year, about two weeks earlier than this year:
