Thanks for taking a look, Alan! Iris reticulata is a wild species that is native to Turkey. Unguicularis is a similar species. The Mediterranean is a source of all kinds of flower bulbs that are cultivated, selectively bred, and hybridized for gardens in other parts of the world, as this one was.

Brilliant capture, brilliant colours, facinating name. Here they grow wild, a bit like Ceasar did, but they remain as anonymous as Iris unguicularis to the botanist.

Yes it is, Wanda! Only mine are a named variety, which it looks like yours are too, the same one. I did take a picture today (Monday) of the species, which is a bit more slender and purple more than blue. I will get around to posting that later today. Thanks for taking a look, my friend!

Thank you for your comments, Julia, Kris, and Elaine! Yeah, Kris, I'm not sure what the name of this iris references. If you or anyone else knows, I'd be glad to be told.

Oh, hello, Wanda, you slipped in while I was typing. Thanks for your congratulations!

Boy, this is gorgeous.

Our iris aren't even showing any
blades above ground yet. Still have
freezing temps here, as in 24 this
morning.

Congratulations on your lovely AC photo, Kathy.
