Clemmons, NC (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: Tuesday night I attended the Festival of Lights at Tanglewood Park, Clemmons, NC, a 4-mile drive through more than 100 displays, many of them in motion. An annual event since 1992, it involves approximately 1 million individual lights, and draws an average of 250,000 visitors. The festival lasts from mid-November through New Year's Day. Here, a pirate ship shoots cannon balls at a fire-breathing dragon on one of the park's pothole lakes.

Thank you, David and Heidrun!

Dave, and Rodney in your earlier comment, I tried some manual settings but I don't half know what I'm doing. Got some very satisfactory results in some cases and dismal failures in others with the exact same settings. Also got satisfactory results using wildly varying settings for seemingly the same conditions. Just too many variables! I need to experiment more with settings some time when I'm more comfortable and not under pressure to finish up and get out of people's way, and when my fingers are not freezing. Thank you, everybody who commented!

Looks a place I could spend an hour or two Kathy, amazing amount of bulbs, noticed your comments on night shots, have put settings in brackets that I have used with some success, by using bulb setting one can vary the shutter time until it suits you, and using a smaller aperture cuts down glare from individual brighter lights, if you look on the LED screen when taking shots, if the brightest lights flash , then one has over exposed, best used with tripod, and cable release.Hope this helps.

Fantastic fun shots! I love Christmas lights!
They had a drive-through display one year at the Speedway, but didn't do it again. Glad we get to
share this one! Congratulations on your new Blue!

Nice work Kathy. Night shots are truly a challenge. Mostly getting the right metering. My best luck has been with manual mode and using the live view to set up. Last - use the timers to help reduce movement. AC Congrats.

Thank you all, Donna, Tim, Cbarlotte, Jim, Dianne, and James! I had a blast last night, though I had to park my car near the concession and crafts building and walk some way in order to take many of these photos without blocking traffic. BTW, the very best time to go is Monday-Thursday, as traffic is really heavy, and gate admission higher, on weekends.

Thank you, approvers!

Thank you, Dudley! Shooting at night offered many challenges; I tried all sorts of different settings but still ended up throwing away about half my shots. The best ones were done using a tripod and automatic camera settings, set for night shots without flash.

Oh, hello James! You sneaked in while I was typing. Glad you like this; thanks for commenting!
