Westfield, NC (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: It's been a strange weather year, with my fruit trees failing almost completely to make any crops, what with late freezes, insects, diseases, and raids by critters. Some of the trees have even died. Now, the cooler autumn weather has tricked some of the remaining ones into blooming out of season, like this plum. This is harmless; it just means there will be not quite so many flowers next spring.

Well Susan, I would be happy to go from autumn right into spring and just skip the winter, but that isn't the way it works. Winter has its raison d'etre too. Thanks for commenting!

Yes, Jan, very true. I know there are azaleas bred to bloom a second time in the fall, but I've never felt right about planting any in my garden; to me azaleas -- and fruit trees -- are supposed to bloom in the spring. Thanks for commenting!

Very pretty, Kathy. James had the same situation out in Michigan. Mother Nature certainly does things on her own terms, doesn't she?

Yes it has been, Eileen! Not just the above, but I've had a pear tree that is resistant to fire blight, now dying from fire blight and scheduled to be cut down.

Life ain't fair, LOL!
