I had no idea there were people on the rock until I downloaded this photo to my computer and viewed it full size.

The colors and contrast in this photo have been enhanced a bit. I think the vertical streaks on the rock are caused by water running down. There are also various cracks and pocks caused by weathering.

You may notice that the bluish area above the top of the mountain is not sky. It's the blue of haze and distance. The camera is actually looking down on this scene from an overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

That bitty climber does more than the trees do to show the scale of that huge rock.

This view really shows the striations in detail. Not nearly as smooth as it appears in the other photo.
