Shaefferstown, PA

Caption: This photo of a flock of snow geese that appears to be flying in formation was taken from 3,000' AGL over Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area near Lancaster, PA. The shape of this formation is something you will never be able to appreciate on the ground. I have never seen anything like this previously in many thousands of hours flying.

This is an amazing shot, one in a million! Good job on catching this. Congratulations on AC! I have read about how they fly in formation for protection and other flying enhancements, but this puts all that into perspective.

I feel very fortunate to have gotten this extremely unusual pic b/c I have flown over flocks of geese on the wing on numerous occasions and never seen anything like this. I don't see how the geese in the far right and far left of the photo know where to be to fit into the configuration. This photo encompasses at least 1/3 mile of ground surface from side to side! It was quite amazing to see. Thanks for the comments & I'm glad you enjoyed the photo.

Wow, wow, wow! It's a gorgeous, well composed photo, with a great artistic appeal, but that flight pattern of the geese - well that is something very special to see. They are brilliant technicians when it comes to planning their conservation of energy, maximum uplift, and reduction of drag with this swarm pattern. Way cool!
