Heat Advisory
Statement as of 2:40 PM CDT on July 31, 2015

... Heat advisory in effect until 6 PM CDT this evening...

The National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio has issued a
heat advisory... which is in effect until 6 PM CDT this evening.

* Temperature... 99 to 102 degrees with heat indices up to 112
degrees.

* Impacts... heat related ailments will be possible for those that
are exposed to the heat for long periods of time. If working or
performing other strenuous activities outdoors... ailments may
begin after short periods.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time
outside... especially in contact with direct sunlight. When
possible... reschedule strenuous activities to the evening or
tomorrow morning.

Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and
drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
emergency... call 911.

Special Statement
Statement as of 1:23 PM CDT on July 31, 2015

... Triple digit heat indices expected through the afternoon...

Temperatures already in the upper 90s and even 100 early this
afternoon have resulted in heat indices from 100 to 109 across
much of south central Texas. With much of the afternoon still left
to continue heating the area... expect these heat indices to
continue or rise throughout the afternoon.

Heat indices of 105 to 109 will be possible with some locations
locally seeing values higher this afternoon. A heat advisory may
be needed later this afternoon if temperatures and heat indices
continue to rise beyond these expectations.

In addition to high heat indices... direct exposure to sunlight can
further toll on the body during times of high heat index so make
sure to take frequent shaded breaks if working outside. Also... do
not leave any children or pets unattended in vehicles for any
amount of time as temperatures will rise at a rapid rate
immediately after turning the vehicle off.
