Watches & Warnings

Lake Effect Snow Warning
Issued: 10:16 PM EST Feb. 11, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Lake effect snow warning remains in effect until 7 am EST
Saturday...

Hazardous weather...

* moderate to heavy lake effect snow will develop tonight
between 2 am and 4 am. Moderate to heavy snow will continue
   through Friday night.

* Winds will increase out of the northwest on Friday morning...
gusting as high as 45 mph near Lake Superior. The strongest winds
will occur late Friday morning through Friday evening. This will
lead to white-out conditions Friday into Friday night... especially
   along M-28.

* Snow accumulations tonight through Friday night are expected to be
6 to 12 inches... greatest from Shot Point to Grand Marais. Lower
amounts of 3 to 6 inches are expected southwest of Trenary and
   Traunik.

* Wind chill readings will be as low as 25 below zero Friday
   afternoon and Friday night.

Impacts...

* blowing and drifting snow will lead to very dangerous travel
conditions tonight through Friday night. Similar past events
have led to the closure of M-28 between Harvey and Munising.
If you become stranded... you will also have to face bitterly
cold wind chills. Avoid travel if possible.

* Wind chill values to 25 below zero can lead to frost bite on
exposed skin in as little as 15 minutes.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

* a lake effect snow warning means significant amounts of lake
effect snow are forecast that will make travel very hazardous
   or impossible.

* A lake effect Snow Advisory Means Lake effect snow is
forecast that will make travel difficult in some areas. Use
   caution when traveling.
