Watches & Warnings

Winter Weather Statement
Issued: Environment Canada
Blizzard Warning
for the Kivalliq area
updated by Environment Canada
at 3:28 p.M. EST Thursday 11 February 2016.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Blizzard Warning for:
      Arviat
      Rankin Region including Whale Cove
      Baker Lake
      Coral Harbour
      naujaat.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
==Discussion==

Blizzards continue over Kivalliq. Winds of 50 to 60 km/h gusting to
70 or 80 km/h are producing blizzard conditions with near zero
visibilities. For much of Kivalliq conditions are not expected to
improve until Friday afternoon when winds decrease. Coral Harbour
will see an improvement overnight. In addition, the very strong
winds will combine with temperatures in the mid minus thirties to
produce dangerous wind chills of minus 55 or colder tonight.

Travel is expected to be extremely hazardous due to reduced
visibility. Consider postponing non-essential travel until
conditions improve. If you must travel, keep others informed of your
schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and Mobile
phone. If you do travel and become lost, remain where you are until
the blizzard has passed. Protect yourself from wind, cold and
disorientation by staying sheltered, indoors or with your vehicle.
Blizzard warnings are issued when widespread reduced visibilities of
400 metres or less are expected for at least 6 hours. Please
continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment
Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to storm(at)ec.Gc.CA
or tweet reports to (hash)nustorm.
